by Carly Wilson / August 12, 2019

ILTACON is a an amazing conference that we have the opportunity to attend every year, this being our 6th year. Just like previous years, we will be a silver sponsor at this event where professionals in the legal industry are able to network and learn together. There is so much to be educated on at this event with experts providing next steps for law firms in each session. This industry is growing , and the firms attending want to grow with it.

One of our favorite things to attend is the Exhibit Hall Opening Reception. This event happens Monday night from 7:00 - 9:00 pm. This year's theme is "A Whole New World of Possibilities - A Journey through Classic TV." Food, drinks, and networking couldn't make for a more exciting night. We look forward to showing off our newest upgrade at our business intelligence booth. We hope to connect with new and old clients, and friends.

There will be many opportunities to connect with the vendors. The exhibit hall is open each day from 9:00 am - 5:00 pm. The conference also allots time for coffee and snack breaks in the vendor hall. We try not to hideout in the vendor hall and attend some sessions that are related to legal business intelligence. Here is what we're thinking will be great this year:

Law in the Era of Legal Data Science: The Impact of Data Analytics in the Legal Industry
(Legal Data Science Series, Session 1)
Monday, August 19, 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm

Like other industries, law firms and corporate law departments are starting to collect more data, focus on data management, and apply new analytical techniques. This series kicks off with a deep dive into the use of analytics in legal and ponders what this means for our industry? Where does this arc of activity and investment take us? The future is exciting and the amount of change on the horizon is dizzying. We will help you contextualize current activity and explore the horizon in this session. Participants will gain strategic insights that will help them understand how data analytics may impact the rule and practice of law.

What is the True Cost to Your Firm of Attorney Incompetence with Technology?
Tuesday, August 20, 11:40 am - 12:00 pm

We will present facts and figures which will show that technology skills are more vital than ever for attorneys. The lack of them has a major impact on profitability and productivity. We believe that it is no longer enough to be a good lawyer; competence with technology is essential to ethical practice as well as a competitive advantage.

The Rise of the Legal Data Science Team: Establishing Data Analytics Capabilities Within the Legal Environment
(Legal Data Science Series, Session 2)
Tuesday, August 20, 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm

In this second part of our Legal Data Science Series, we will discuss the development and structure of in-house and law firm legal data science departments. Once you've decided to embrace data science, learn about the resources necessary to start, the projects that offer the greatest early ROI, and the different data analytics team models and talent required to staff these cutting-edge positions. Our 2018 session with a similar name was a smash, as we discussed what it's like to initially establish data analytics capabilities within a legal environment. This session seeks to extend the conversation to building out a data analytics team. Attendees will learn how to propose, develop, and staff a data analytics team. Attendees will learn about data analytics case studies that have been undertaken by these teams and understand the value data analytics bring to the business and practice of law.

Data Engineering and Data Mining: Exploring Trends and Approaches from Inside and Outside of our Industry
(Legal Data Science Series, Session 3)
Wednesday, August 21, 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm

There is undoubtedly more analytics activity in our industry than ever before. As activity continues to grow, technical teams face new challenges and opportunities. To scale analytics activities, organizations may need some new technology, an extension of skills, and an evolved perspective. The meaning of "data management" for leadership and technical teams is changing, and expertise in "data engineering" and "data mining" is becoming more relevant and necessary. This session will bring in voices from inside and outside of our field to share thoughts and perspective on emerging technical topics in other industries and to engage in organic discussion. From structured data sources, to master data management, to graph databases, to data pipes, and beyond, get ready for a sweeping primer on contemporary topics in data engineering and data mining. Learn about tangible Data Science project possibilities and how to formulate legal strategies based on data.

Data Visualization in the Legal Industry: Mixing Art and Science for Impact
(Legal Data Science Series, Session 4)
Thursday, August 22, 11:30 am - 12:30 pm

Within law firms and legal departments, the techniques being used to draw insights from data continue to advance and become more sophisticated. The math that underlies data science can be mind-bending, but the interfaces that lawyers see and interact with shouldn't be. Good data visualization balances art and science. In this session, see experts tour real world examples of thoughtful data visualization in a number of contexts, from financial, to pricing, to practice management, and more. This session will engage the left brain, the right brain, and be a wholly enjoyable experience. Learn how to present data effectively and identify some traps to avoid (pie charts).

The BigSquare team cannot wait for another year at ILTACON! Connecting with other professionals in the industry is a wonderful experience. We will share more about the conference on our LinkedIn and Twitter accounts, so make sure you are following along. Check back on our blog spot in a couple weeks to see our reflections of the conference. If you are attending, we hope to see you there!
