Legal BI- No Longer A Nice To Have, A Need To Have

by Carly Wilson / May 15, 2020

The firms that are providing their attorneys insight into the important data are the law firms that will win! Over the past few years, and certainty the last few months, there have been huge shifts in the legal industry. As we shared in our recent blog post about how the industry has changed and quickly adapted to technology, we predict that the sudden change creates an opportunity for growth!

"Business as usual" at firms was quickly changed in the matter of days. Law firms were forced to rapidly adapt in order to enable work to take place outside of the office. Optimizing for remote work is no longer a nice to have, it’s now critical to law firm operations and client service. We have been speaking with firms of different sizes, in different regions about what tools have helped them through this global shift and business intelligence applications is a consistent trend.

I could not imagine going into this environment without the metrics updated daily. If you don't know if you have enough cash to go through the next few months how are you operating efficiently? You need the information on more than monthly basics, weekly or daily is now VITAL.

-Chuck Nebel, COO at McNees Wallace & Nurick

We connected Robert Ingalls of LawPods with one of our clients, Tom Petrelli of Petrelli Previtera for a podcast to discuss how his firm has handled the transition to a virtual workspace. While Tom has been utilizing cloud-based solutions and other remote-friendly tools prior to the Coronavirus crisis, Tom says the pandemic has helped him and his team identify gaps in their preparedness strategy. Tom walks the listeners through the various cloud based solutions that has helped his firm.

" ...Clio is very good, too. We can monitor the clients, we can share it through the clients that way and secure, they have a Clio portal which we utilize a lot, so it all fits together. Another piece of software that we use that’s been really helpful is BigSquare. They provide us our analytical business intelligence software, which we use on a daily basis to monitor on a week by week basis how much the attorneys are billing, who has how much in their trust accounts, who has AR. ... This lets the attorneys self-manage and we look at it from a higher perspective of the management side to get a bigger picture of what’s happening in the firm, and also to make sure that the attorneys are on track."

Listen to Tom share more about what legal tools has helped his firm operate efficiently in this podcast episode: How to Take Your Law Firm Virtual During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The last two months have seen seismic shifts in the world, severely impacting not only day-to-day life but how firms are practicing law. Providing accurate, role based, targeted intelligence and analytics for your law firm – especially in a largely remote work environment - is no longer a nice to have, but a NEED TO HAVE.

The pandemic has become a catalyst for technology transformation within law firms.  Firms can no longer resist tackling their pain points head on.  Law firms who are able to provide targeted, real-time analytics to both attorneys AND administrative staff - in a secure, fast and accurate manner – whenever and wherever – will ultimately prove who succeeds AND who fails moving forward.

We had a phenomenally seamless transition to work-from-home.  Thank God we have BigSquare, It has been a huge help!  In this environment, the need for real time data is now even more exaggerated. Having BigSquare to access real time data, in any form we need, is extremely helpful. Our attorneys can now get to data they could have never accessed before.  The ease of pulling info, in all different ways, is a game changer.  BigSquare has taken us to a new level!
